The geologic units and their potential for carrying water were investigated in the southwestern part of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The ground-water flow system provides water to the springs at Quitobaquito and other areas, and an understanding of the aquifers and movement of groundwater is important to management of natural resources within the monument. One concern is that withdrawals of water for agriculture and other uses south of the United States/Mexico boundary may affect water resources in the study area. Although the local recharge area for the springs was found to be completely within the monument, an increase in pumping in Mexico could affect the larger system of the La Abra Plains area and thus eventually the local recharge area as well.
