Aztec Ruins and Chaco Canyon National Monuments, as well as other southwestern archeological sites, contain peculiar tri-wall structures, the use of which by the prehistoricIndians of this area has long been a mystery. In 1953, R. Gordon Vivian, arche*ologist of the National Park Service, directed excavation of the Hubbard Mound at AztecRuins National Monument. His careful and detailed work laid bare one of these tri-wallstructures.From his analysis of multi-walled structures at the Hubbard Site and at other sitesin New Mexico and Colorado, the author has formulated a significant hypothesis. Muchmore testing will be necessary to fully develop this hypothesis; but, meanwhile, it opensan interesting new pathway into the darkness obscuring our knowledge of America'sancient past.
