This study was conducted at the request of the National Park Service to determine effects of pumping on groundwater in the Pinto Basin (within Joshua Tree National Monument). The basin was formed by downfaulting along several major fault zones, and these faults affect the present flow and storage of groundwater in the area. The investigation determined that even though water withdrawn during 1959 came from groundwater storage beneath the basin, enough remained that there was little likelihood of a problem. With continuing monitoring, if future problems develop enough advance notice would be available to allow preventive measures. Illustrations include well hydrographs and water level tables, water chemistry and other data, soil materials as indicated by drillers' logs, and pumpage by Kaiser Steel Corporation. A map folded into the pocket shows 'reconnaissance geology, ground-water storage unit, and wells' in Pinto Basin.
