In winter of 2002 a group of scientists, managers and policy makers convened to describe the approaches by which visitors to Alaska National Park Service units could be enumerated. During the two-day meeting, managers outlined the strengths and constraints of counting visitors in vast and remote areas of their units. Two representative units, Gates of the Arctic-Yukon Charley and Katmai, were chosen for the diversity of terrain in order to develop some uniform approaches to enumerating visitors. The Working Group then suggested possible approaches that optimized the physical and logistical strengths of the NPS. These approaches were debated, and challenged. The approaches outlined in this report are the recommendations of the Working Group.
