The book documents Dick Proenneke's life and observations during the 1970s Great Alaska Lands debate that culminated with the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) in 1980. The journals are replete with Proenneke's early involvement with the National Park Service, his interaction with residents in the Lake Clark country and beyond, and of course, his unique adventures photographing wildlife, and his profound knowledge of wildlife behavior. In addition, Proenneke's superb self-sufficient woodcraft skills and conservation ethic shine through on nearly every page. To read Proenneke's words describing his wilderness life is to be uplifted from our modern mass culture, and even though Proenneke was a man of our times, he seemed to transcend our ordinary life and created a heroic existence of his own.
