Variation, Distribution, and Taxonomic Status of the Lizard, Sceloporus undulatus bergatus Smith

Field studies in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico indicate that Sceloporus undulatus virgatus (Smith, 1938) and S. u. consobrinus (Baird and Girard, 1853) are allopatric with strikingly different ecological "preferences" resulting in complex interdigitation of ranges. Consistent morphological differences between these forms, absence of intergradation in closely adjacent populations, and differences in habitat "preferences" indicate specific rather than subspecific relationship. Therefore, the name S. u. virgatus should be changed to S. virgatus. Comparisons of S. virgatus, S. undulatus consobrinus, and its apparently closest relative, S. undulatus tristichus, are presented. Notes on reproduction of S. virgatus are included.
