This study examined the effectiveness of passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags to track the movement of desert tortoises. This technology was utilized as part of a study to examine how often desert tortoise use culverts to reach the other side of a highway after a barrier fence had been constructed. Use of the system began in the spring of 1995. This paper deals primarily with the effectiveness of the transponders and the mechanics of their use.
