This article describes a study on the deaths of desert tortoises following periods of drought and research manipulation in the American Southwest Mojave desert during 1990-1995. This article discusses the methods and results of the study. The methods and results include: source of the desert tortoises and field sites, weather data, histories, field evaluations, physical examinations, comparisons of drought effects on source populations, weight-length relationships, hematologic and plasma biochemical evaluations, and necropsies.
