The authors studied environmental factors that limit the distribution of related species along elevational gradients in the Mojave Desert. They estimated the distribution and abundance of two closely related kangaroo rat species along an elevational gradient for seven years between 1983 to 1999. They found that population densities of Dipodomys merriami and D. panamintinus at high versus low elevations depend on climate change, metabolic requirement, and interspecies competition.
