The authors explored a classic ecology problem, which is how species that are ecologically similar to each other can coexistent. They studied 8 different Heteromyid rodent communities from California and Arizona (Dipodomys, Chaetodipus, and Perognathus) that shared a limited seed resource in an indoor arena. They found that interspecies differences in strategies for seed-caching behavior (i.e. harvesting and storing seeds) have the potential to promote coexistence.
