The desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is currently considered a single species, however, genetic and morphological studies have identified two geographic assemblages within the USA. The Sonoran assemblage occurring east and south of the Colorado River, and the Mojave assemblage occurs west and north of the river. Genetic and morphological profiles of an unusual tortoise population occurring in the Black Mountains of western Arizona are described in this paper.
