Scute proteins have not been characterized in desert tortoise and one focus of this paper was to determine the cause of diseases affecting the shell. The research examined whether differences exist in shell scute proteins from tortoise with cutaneous dyskeratosis, compared with proteins in tortoises with healthy-appearing shells. Complete postmortem examinations were performed on 20 desert tortoise obtained from the Mojave and Colorado Deserts of California.
