In August 1995, at least 45 bighorn sheep, Ovis canadensis, had died near two artificial water catchments (guzzlers) in the Mojave Desert, California. Water samples, fly larvae and pupae samples, blood samples from bighorn sheep carcasses were collected and tested. Mouse bioassay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay detected type C botulism toxin in hemolyzed blood and fly larvae/pupae. This led to the conclusion that type C botulism poisoning was presumably responsible for the bighorn sheep deaths.
