Determination of Critical Habitat for the Endangered Nelson's Bighorn Sheep in Southern California

To evaluate habitat use in the northern Santa Rosa Mountains, California, the authors analyzed 12,411 locations of Nelson's bighorn sheep collected from 1984 to 1998. They developed a multiple logistic regression model and used five habitat predictors (elevation, slope aspect, ruggedness, proximity to water, distance to escape route). Their habitat model correctly classified greater than 96% of observed bighorn sheep locations which occurred within 3km to a water source. Using this model, they found that only 34% of the US Fish and Wildlife Service -designated critical habitat area had a high probability of bighorn sheep use.
