This study examined the distribution of nine sagebrush species and subspecies in the mountain ranges of the Great Basin. Improved understanding of the identification, distribution and ecological indicator significance of each sagebrush taxa can be used to interpret site differences for these ranges. The authors found climate to be the strongest influence on basin-wide distributions while soils and exposure are important on the local scale. Data were collected from 66 of the approximately 200 mountain ranges of the Great Basin. There were three levels of sampling intensity: rapid, intermediate and intensive. Sampling plots were 20m x 50m on which land form, land use, soil and vegetation data were collected. Two mountain ranges were sampled at the intensive level, 17 at the intermediate level, and 46 at the rapid level.
