Reviews past history of landuse and change in Hawaii and current programs, such as a project building on programs of the Divsion of Ecology and Health, and the Asia-Pacific Center for Infectious Disease Ecology, linking ecosystem resilience and infectious diseases. The human-natural system dynamic has characteristic landscape and drainage basin changes which have precipitated other changes in ecological functions affecting the hydrologic regime of mountain-to-sea ecosystems in Hawai'i that have specific human health and safety implications. A model is presented on the relationship of catchment hydroecology and the effects of drainage basin development on leptospirosis prevalence.
