The importance of species diversity has received new attention within the National Parks Service (NPS) in recent years, resulting in an initiative to identify and list species within each park system and make the list accessible online to the public. The NPS is compiling a comprehensive list of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and fishes found within each National Park’s boundaries. A species diversity list provides valuable information to scientists, park rangers, and the public. In addition, future diversity studies within the parks can be compared with current baseline data. Comprehensive species lists can influence government funding, park management decisions, park attendance, and future planning for areas known to contain endangered or threatened species. While most species lists concentrate on terrestrial species found within the National Parks, several parks encompass aquatic habitats as well. The Gulf Islands National Seashore (GUIS) is the park of interest for this report, specifically the fresh and saltwater environments. At least one book, (Hoese and Moore, 1998), several other scientific studies (e.g., Gunter, 1938, Reid, 1954, and Modde and Ross, 1980) and multiple collections have documented fishes of the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM); however, a comprehensive inventory of fish species found specifically within the GUIS park boundaries has never been compiled. Therefore, the major scope of the current project is to contribute a list of fish species known or likely to exist within the boundaries of the Gulf Islands National Seashore from previous research efforts.
