Joshua trees and barrel cacti can be transplanted by bare rooting in large numbers and maintained in high density nurseries for at least two years with a very low death rate (4% for Joshua trees and 8% for barrel cacti). This allows both affordable salvage of areas that will be disturbed and the use of large numbers of plants up to 90 years old in revegetation and landscaping.
