Introduction of non-local materials may lead to failure of the revegetation project and endanger the long-term biological health of nearby populations. The author provides five primary conclusions based on extensive scientific evidence: 1) use native species when practicing restoration; 2) the use of "native" species is not enough; 3) the best option is to use seeds or clones from nearby plants; 4) to restore local A, do not collect seeds or plants at A, grow them in a very different environment at local B and return the progeny, after four generations to local A; and 5) restoration efforts are often species-specific as different species have different life histories.
