Borings 10 ft deep and 1,000 ft apart on the floor of Kilauea caldera are proposed to (1) ascertain the increase in temperature with depth; (2) see whether there is any difference between the temperatures in different holes at the same depth; and (3) see to what extent heat is produced by slow oxidation of the lava. [The rationale for shallow borings was rendered obsolete as more information was gathered on the physical properties of basalt and on the mechanism of volcanic action at Kilauea.]
