Cross states that there has been a long series of eruptions of basaltic lavas from Hawaiian volcanoes from some time in the Tertiary to the present. The fact that no other types of lava alternate with basalt and no apparent progressive change has occurred contrasts with the history of most volcanic centers. Eruptive activity of Kilauea, beginning in June, 1902, was confined to Halemaumau pit. Cross also mentions an occurrence of trachyte on the island of Hawaii.
