Hitchcock CH. 1908. News from Kilauea. Science. 28(705):19-20

Hitchcock describes lava lake activity at Kilauea during May 1908, quoted from an account by L.A. Thurston (1908). Lava in Halemaumau was only 200 ft below the caldera floor. The size of the lake was 800 ft by 400 ft, with an island 78 ft long in the northern part. He describes building of levees on the surface of the lake.
