Hinds includes within the Maui group the islands of Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe, and the submerged Penguin Bank. He infres that they could have been connected at one time from known amounts of submergence on other islands. He describes the deposits on Penguin Bank and notes that it provides for Maui a close connection with Oahu. He considers the island of a Hawaii to be a separate volcano group. He contrasts the youthful Haleakala with the older West Maui volcano. Although Haleakala is generally older than Mauna Kea, he recognizes the series of much younger lavas in Haleakal crater and on the flank, including the eruption identified as dating from 1750. He also contrasts Haleakala and Mauna Kea, noting that Haleakala shows no evidence of glaciation. He cites two possible origins for Haleakala crater--a graben ('rent') or caldera ('sink') without coming to any conclusion, nor considering the possibility of erosion. He speculates on the relative ages of the volcanoes, considering that West Maui and Kauai ceased their main activity at the same time.
