Mountain sheep and mule deer are more apt to become entangled in wire than in rail fences. Native ungulates the size of mule deer or mountain sheep are able to step under or through rail fences, whereas cattle and feral equids are too large to do so. Moreover, native artiodactyls may jump over rail fences, but feral equids and cattle appear unwilling, or unable, to do so. Construction design for rail exclusion fencing is included in this article.
