The author describes Kilauea caldera and its activity in January 1919, quoted from a letter by de Vis-Norton. The lava level is attributed to 'the usual equinoctial rise . . . due partly to the abnormal squeezing of the Hawaiian fissure system.' He describes as unusual the southwestern overflow building up behind its own dams. [Modern studies show that this process is fairly common if the overflow rate is not too great and the topography is favorable.]
