Powers notes that main shield-building lavas are saturated in silica, whereas later lavas in the decadent state of activity are undersaturated. The latter are overrepresented in collections, leading to erroneous statements that typical Hawaiian lava is undersaturated. Olivine basalt is considered to be an inappropriate term, as the olivine is an unstable relic mineral. [This last point is incorrect.]
