The BHP-Utah International (UII) proposes to develop the Alton Coal Project located southwest of Bryce Canyon National Park. Coal will be recovered through surface mining techniques. The National Park Service (NPS) expressed concern that the effects of lighting at the Alton Coal Project might affect visitor enjoyment of the night sky (i.e., stars, constellations, etc.) at Bryce Canyon. In order to estimate the possible effects, Systems Application Inc. was retained by the NPS and UII to study the potential effects of night sky lighting from the proposed coal project. In this study night sky glow resulting from nighttime operation of the proposed mine was calculated, and the potential for human perception of these effects was estimated.
