Monitoring of grizzly bears within the Going-to-the-Sun road corridor during 2006, attempting to document impacts to bears related to road reconstruction activities. The report summarizes recent studies that document grizzly bear use of the road corridor - USGS Greater Glacier Area Bear DNA Project (1998 – 2000), Northern Divide Grizzly Bear Project (2004), and the NCDE Grizzly Bear Population Trend Monitoring Project (2004 - present) - and sighting data from GNP’s Bear Information Management System (BIMS). The 2006 monitoring activity was focused on bear scoping surveys. Twenty observation points were used west of the Continental Divide - 22 slope surveys for bears were conducted between 2 June and 26 October. East of the Divide, 11 observation points along the road were used between the foot of Saint Mary Lake and Logan Pass - 14 slope surveys were conducted between 4 April and 13 September. Maps are presented, as are monitoring results and relevance of bear use (and other observed wildlife species) in the road corridor.
