A literature review and field study to discover the ecological requirements of bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata and P. glandulosa) was conducted in five regions of California: Cascade Province, Modoc Plateau, Basin and Ranges, and the Mojave Desert. The life history, relationships to soil and other plants, successional relationships, grazing effects, and pests (insects, diseases, etc.) of Purshia spp. are all discussed.
