Field surveys of Limnephilus assimilis were conducted in Death Valley National Monument from 1978 through 1979. The objective of the study was to document, using standard sampling techniques and cage experiments with larvae in the field, the times of occurrence and duration of the developmental stages of the caddisfly, and to relate the phenology to physical-chemical factors in the natural environment and the response of larvae to these factors in the laboratory. This desert caddis fly, like many species occurring in temporary aquatic habitats in temperate regions, appears to avoid unfavorable high summer temperatures through adult reproductive diapause.
