Viewpoint: Benefits and Impacts of Wildlife Water Developments

Beginning in the 1940s-1950s state and federal resource management agencies initiated water development programs intended to benefit game species and other wildlife. Recently, resource managers have begun to question the need to continue to develop and maintain these artificial water sources. Adverse impacts of the water developments may be increased predation, increased competition at water developments, and direct mortality due to animals becoming trapped and health problems due to poor water quality. These negative impacts; however, are not supported by data and remain largely speculative. The authors conclude by detailing the types of studies needed to assess the positive and negative ecological impacts of the water developments.
