The environment and phytosociological characteristics of the pinyon woodland zone of the White Mountains of California are described and contrasted with those of other southwestern representatives of this vegetation type. Apparent fluctuations in population structure of pinyon pine through time are related to grazing history and catastrophic climatic events.
