Diverse marine ecosystems are found in Hawaiian waters, occurring to depths of 16,500 feet (5,000 m) and extending inland from the coasts to include marine ponds. Native species dominate all but two of the marine ecosystems described here. Several factors control the variety, distribution, and abundance of marine life. Today, reefs and many other marine ecosystems are poorly developed along many northern, and some southern, coasts of the main islands. In some locations this may be due in part to recent, human-caused pollution and coastal development. Zonation, and evolution of ecosystems are discussed.
