Nitrate levels recorded by the authors at Little Lost Man Creek show both background conditions, and effects of either storm runoff or experimental nutrient additions. Nitrogen output decreased when additional nitrogen was made available because of increased storage/biotic uptake. Increased discharge, with the resultant dilution, increased both biotic retention and export of stored nitrate. A greater amount of nitrogen flowed downstream for a week after amendments were stopped. 'This type of response may enhance biotic nutrient cycling by providing waters of higher nutrient concentration to partially scoured epilithic surfaces following reset of the benthic community by a major storm.' Includes tables of stream conditions and of nitrate-nitrogen budgets on 5 dates, and graphs of nitrate and chloride concentrations, discharge/chloride/nitrate concentration.
