In situ studies of metabolism in benthic reef communities
Wells JM, Wells AH, Vanderwalker JG. 1973. In situ studies of metabolism in benthic reef communities. Helgolinder wiss Meeresunters. 24:78-81
Measured relative rates of photosynthesis and respiration in coral species and Tridacna gigas (a clam in which 4% of the mantle tissue is composed of zooxanthellae) to measure the energy input of the zooxanthellae. Experiments took place at St. John (part Tektite II program). Also compared results with a pristine and a polluted area off of Florida.
