Landbird inventory for Lewis and Clark National Historical Park (2006)
Siegel RB, Wilkerson RL, Kuntz RC. 2009. Landbird inventory for Lewis and Clark National Historical Park (2006). Natural Resource Technical Report. NPS/NCCN/NRTR—2009/166. National Park Service. Fort Collins, Colorado
The National Park Service (NPS) is charged with managing park natural resources and preventing their loss or impairment. NPS established the Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring Program to provide funding and technical support to help park units collect scientifically credible ecological resource information and to develop or improve field and analytical monitoring techniques to aid park managers in protecting their natural resources. As a first step, 5-year inventories were initiated in the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN) to gather core sets of data describing park vascular plants and vertebrate resources. The landbird inventory was designed to determine habitat-specific density of breeding landbirds at Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, using methods consistent with those employed in other parks in the NCCN. The goals of the inventory were to estimate habitat-specific density and park-wide abundance for a large suite of species, and to produce information to assist park managers and cooperators in designing a long-term landbird monitoring program. This inventory expands on the 2004 effort (Wilkerson and Siegel 2009) and includes portions of the Fort Clatsop unit which were in the process of being transferred to park management or were not yet within the identified scope of the project. Point counts were conducted at 81 point count stations arrayed systematically the park. We detected 59 bird species. For 31 species, distance sampling techniques were used to account for detectability, and provide estimates of density (birds/ha). These density estimates can serve as benchmarks against which future changes in park bird populations can be measured.
