The Owens Valley pupfish (Cyprinodon radiosus), once thought extinct, was rediscovered and reestablished in the Owens Valley Native Fish Sanctuary. The Owens pupfish, CYprinodon radiosus, is restricted to Owens Valley along the eastern base of the Sierra nevada range of California. When it was described in 1948 it was thought to be extinct. During June or July 1956, W. M. Richardson and Ralph V. Beck of the California Department of Fish and Game collected a few Owens pupfish from shallow ponds near Rish Slough.
