Beech bark disease is caused by fungal pathogens, Nectria ssp, after predisposition of the beech scale, Cryptococcus fagisuga. In 1993 the disease was found in GRSM. Permanent study plots were established and monitored. Few natural enemies of beech scale were observed. Given these factors, the beech trees will probably continue to threaten the species in GRSM.
