Prior to 2006, the status of the amphibian and reptile inventory for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (herein SLBE) was considered “fair” by Casper (2004); to date, herpetofaunal inventories at SLBE document twenty-four (24) species from the park as of October 2006. All inventory results and methods will be described in detail in a forthcoming report (Casper and Anton, in prep.). Amphibian monitoring was initiated in 2006 by NPS staff at selected GLKN parks. Pictured Rocks and Apostle Islands National Lakeshores and SLBE were the focus of monitoring and method evaluations in 2006. Proposed products requested by the GLKN Network that were pertinent to monitoring amphibians at SLBE included: 1) assistance in larval identification, 2) visitation of previously identified sites, to determine suitability for monitoring and of methods appropriate to the sites, 3) assessment of species occurring at the sites (addressed by Casper and Anton, in prep.), 4) a useable wetland classification, and 5), field crew training and evaluation in methods and techniques, and, 6) recommendations to the field crew for modification of protocols, where appropriate (and addition or elimination of methods, as determined by park conditions and amphibian communities within SLBE).
