Redwood National and State Parks' (RNSP) 2006 annual progress report for monitoring seabird colonies in the Park. Excerpts: "The 2004 RNSP Marine Inventory and Monitoring Scoping Session identified the common murre colony on False Klamath Cove Rock (FKCR) as a top priority for any marine monitoring program in the parks. The FKCR common murre colony was surveyed from the overlook on the Coastal/Yurok Loop Trail. Common murres were counted in aggregations of 25, 50 and 100 birds. Other nesting seabirds were also counted while conducting common murre counts. Other species breeding on FKCR include Brandt's cormorants, double-crested cormorants, western gulls, pelagic cormorants, and pigeon guillemots." The estimated high count for common murres on FKCR was 8,851 in 2006. This report includes high counts for common murres and other seabird species for each year 2003-2006, a discussion, recommendations, and literature cited. The appendix includes a map of the study area. Of note this year, a predation event by a bald eagle was observed, no predation by ravens was observed (unlike last year), and common murre numbers were by far the lowest counted since the monitoring began in 2003.
