Research was done by USGS and Redwood National and State Park scientists. Their hypothesis was that elevated stream temperatures in the middle river reach constitute a thermal restriction for juvenile coho rearing. They found that in the middle 50-km-long middle reach summer water temperatures were significantly warmer than the temperatures recommended for coho.
