Preliminary report on the 1985 test survey of Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico

McKenna PJ, Powers R, Phagan CJ, Nordby LV. 1986. Preliminary report on the 1985 test survey of Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico. Branch of Cultural Research. Albuquerque, NM

This report summarizes the results of a "test" archaeological survey conducted at Bandelier National Monument by the Branch of Cultural Research between July 1 and August 2, 1985. The purposes of the test survey, preparatory to the large scale sample inventory of the Monument were to: 1) identify potential research topics for subsequent investigation; 2) select a method for stratifying and sampling the Monument; 3) gain an understanding of the density, distribution, and kinds of archaeological sites at Bandelier; 4) test field methods and survey forms; and 5) determine future field logistics. By means of discussion of the test survey methodology, preliminary data analysis, and concluding remarks, each of these five objectives is addressed. Several major research topic or problem areas are identified for investigation based on the potential of the data base, and preliminary analysis. A system, for stratification of the Monument is established, tested, and recommended for implementation with minor revision. Based on site densities, site type variability, and terrain, recommendations for inventory sampling levels are made. Based on the test survey results, site density projections, site distributions, and site types encountered are discussed. Test survey field methods, and recording formats, including bi-level reconnaissance and complete recording treatments are discussed and recommended for use by the inventory. Finally, recommendations for backcountry camp establishment and supply are made.
