INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT This is a preliminary report to the Friends of Bandelier and Bandelier National Monument on work done by the author during the summer of 1994. Friends of Bandelier provided funding for this research, and the work was carried out under the general supervision of Dr. Tim Kohler, Washington State University. The primary goal of this project was to conduct in-field design element analysis of whiteware ceramics from several sites within the Monuments that fell into a designated temporal period (see below). The design element data was added to the pre-existing ceramic style database created for the Bandelier Archaeological Excavation Project by Michelle Gray (Gray and Albaugh 1992), and will be used to study design style patterning of Northern Rio Grande whiteware through time and space. The secondary goal of the project was to collect a small sample of whiteware sherds from selected sites in Bandelier for compositional analysis. Identification of whiteware compositional groups for each ceramic type (e.g. Santa Fe B/w) is necessary because it is these compositional groups that will be the units of analysis for the study of design element patterning. This project uses principal components analysis to explore the structure of a design element data set of ceramics from Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico. Sherd data from 54 sites from various temporal periods are used for this analysis, and each site equals an observation. Only Santa Fe Black-on-white sherds were used, since the purpose of this project was to explore the dimensions of variation within ceramic types rather than between them. Because of small sample sizes, Wiyo and Kwahe'e Black-on-white sherds were not examined in this preliminary analysis.
