In order to address the question of what role soil variability plays in altitudinal field selection at Bandelier, the profiles and properties of soils in a sample of five soil pits are described. Based on soil property and landscape data recovered at each location, I identify and evaluate: 1) differences in soil profile development and the processes responsible for soil formation; 2) the effects of state factors, including climate, organic constituents, topography, parent materials, and time, on soils, and; 3) what bearing the observed soil differences may have had on Puebloan selection of agricultural fields.
