The 1996 Bandelier Archaeology Survey Project (BASP) took place near the southern boundary of Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico between June 12, 1996 and August 20, 1996. Archeological technicians and volunteers surveyed 376 acres in five distinct areas located within the Dome Fire Burned Area perimeter. Work commenced just two months after a wildfire burned through 4,776 acres of the park. The primary goal for conducting this survey is 1) to identify the sites that are located within the Dome Fire Burned Area, 2) to determine which sites have been damaged by fire effects and 3) to mitigate the damage by prescribing preservation treatments to the damaged site.
