Monitoring the birds of the National Park Service, Northern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN): year 2

This report documents the results of the second year of habitat-based landbird monitoring in the Northern Colorado Plateau Network, which the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory completed in 2006. In 2005, the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (RMBO) initiated year one of the NCPN long-term land bird monitoring protocol. In 2006, the second year of the monitoring effort, a total of 11, 227 individual birds of 128 species were detected on point-count transects in the three habitats of interest. 4,160 individual birds of 96 species were detected in low-elevation riparian habitat; 3,124 individual birds of 81 species were detected in pinyon-juniper habitat; and 3,943 individual birds of 103 species were detected in sage shrubland habitat. The analyses yielded robust results for 40 bird species (in at least one habitat) that should be effectively monitored under the current monitoring program. Habitat-specific population trends will be detectable for these 40 species within the maximum target of 30 years, the long-term goal of this monitoring project. However, short-term trends will be available after several years of monitoring data like these, in order to provide information needed to effectively manage and conserve bird populations in the NCPN. This will include spatial distribution, abundance, and relationship to important habitat characteristics for each species. The report also includes one-page accounts and maps for each bird species detected in 2006 that is of management interest (as designated by Partners in Flight).
