This article depicts the historical record of the hunting of the desert bighorn sheep (Ovis nelsoni) by a government hunter, Bill Frakes, who was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to collect unharmed specimens. The story, written by L. Burr Belden, is recalled by Ernest J. Ward, a retired civil engineer who lived in the Camp Cady area of the Mojave Desert and was associated with Bill Frakes.
