There are eight sections to the thesis: Introduction, Study Area, and Methods, Fire History, Characteristics of Fire Disturbance, Early Response to Fire Disturbance, and Present Vegetational Pattern. Each of the last four are divided into introduction, results, discussion, and summary. The final section is titled summary and conclusions. Among these last are the evidence that man-made fires were formerly of greater influence than at present, that all but a few most mesic areas showed evidence of burns, and that yellow pine cannot survive without occasional fires. Climate, topography, and vegetation patterns all influence fires, forming a complex pattern.
