This paper presents an interpretative overview of five hundred years of environmental change in the Carribean. There have been five hundred years of deforestation and land clearing, species extinction, alien plant and animal introductions, land,air, and water pollution, human population growth, and urbanization. Because no National Park unit is in the same ecological condition as when Columbus stepped foot on the Americas in 1492, there are many natural resource management challenges that face us.
