In 1961 thirty-seven Merriam turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo merriami) were released in the Mt. Trumbull/Mt. Logan study area in an effort to expand the historical range of the wild turkey in Arizona. Today, more than 20 years later, population estimates range from 150 to 350 turkeys. The Mt. Trumbull turkey population has been successfully hunted since 1964.
